WHAT IS A PANEL?

Most panel shops consider a “panel” to be some controls mounted in an enclosure. Their responsibility is usually limited to accurately building the panel to the customer’s prints or specifications. Southeastern Systems, Inc. includes this in our definition as well as a lot more.

Your Panel may be a complete control system in an enclosure, an operator panel, instrument panel, fluid power panel, data acquisition interface, communications interface, power connection panel or just a simple junction box. You may want to control some motors, pumps or valves and just need someone to mount the controls in an enclosure. You may have designed a system and can perform the mechanical portions of a project in plant, but lack the necessary electrical fabrication resources. You may have purchased a packaged system and simply need to interface with it.

You may have purchased a system which does 90% of what you need, but lacks some functions.

For example, we have retrofitted system functions which look and perform as if they were part of the original purchased system. In many cases, this involved alarms, reporting or data acquisition (data recording). One customer purchased the exact test system needed, except for their customer’s requirement for acoustical analysis. Southeastern Systems, Inc added the transducers and DAT recorder, as well as control interface. Another customer purchased a machine which did an excellent job of balancing a shaft, however their customer wanted 100% run out assurance testing and data. Southeastern Systems, Inc added the run out measurement and data recording.

We can also mount monitors, computers, displays, provide consoles or cabinetry, labeling or artwork.

We can provide custom NEMA rated panel enclosures to meet any application.

HOW HAVE OUR CUSTOMERS BENEFITTED FROM OUTSOURCING PANELS ?

ENGINEERING RESOURCE:

Some of our customers needed panels or control systems, but didn’t have the in plant resources to design or fabricate them (or needed these resources elsewhere).

ENGINEERING/DESIGN SAVINGS:

Sometimes our customers purchased almost what they needed “off the shelf” and used SES to add the rest. When this was possible, they saved because Engineering and design costs were virtually eliminated.

REDUCED OVERHEAD AND PROFITABILTY PROTECTION:

Often our customers have in plant resources for panel building, but they are part of the maintenance group. By outsourcing their panels, they better utilized their maintenance personnel to maintain and protect their production capability and profitability. Since the cost of building the panel in plant involves not only loss of resources, but the fringe benefits and overhead associated with their employees, Southeastern Systems, Inc. reduced our customers true costs by being specialized and more efficient.

SCHEDULE PROTECTION:

In plant production demands always take priority. When time is of the essence, Southeastern Systems, Inc. commits to our customer’s schedule and is not subject to these delays. Our customer’s were free to concentrate on their production, while our top priority was their project.

DOCUMENTATION:

In plant projects sometimes yield to the pressures of the day-to-day operation. Documentation suffers as a matter of expediency. This is a short term gain with long term, sometimes substantial costs. SES will insure that the system is documented per your drawings (if provided) or can document the project fully, including drawings, panel and component tags, and wire labels.

WHAT TECHNOLOGIES ARE WE EXPERIENCED WITH ?

SES has extensive experience with a variety of technologies. Some of these include:

Hard-Wired RF Microwave
Robotics Remote I/O Fieldbuss
Profibus DeviceNet DH-485
RS-232 Modbus EtherNet/IP
ControlNet Foundation Fieldbuss Can Buss
Ethernet Infared DH, DH+
Fiber Optic Servo Motion Control
CNC Nuclear Power Distribution
Heating Processes Fluid and Gas Delivery HVAC and Ventillation
Fluid Power (Hydraulic and Pneumatic) Automated Label Removal and Application

WHAT PANEL IDENTIFICATION METHODS ARE USED ?

Wire Labels: We presently stock Brady wrap around, TYCO Heat Shrink and Graphoplast Segmented Labels

Tags: Engraved plastic, metal, photoetched metal

Panel Marking: Plastic overlay, metal engraved, silkscreened

We stock and are experienced with these labeling materials, however we would be happy to use any brand or method you desire.

WHAT ENCLOSURES ARE USED ?

Virtually any manufacturer is available to us, but the following are some of enclosures we have experience with:

We can mount your electrical equipment (computers, displays, AV Controls etc) in custom crafted furniture grade cabinetry to match the décor of your office, A/V Room or your boardroom.

OPERATOR INTERFACE – A SPECIALTY ?

The operator’s interface to the system is crucial to it’s efficient operation. SES has vast experience with an array of operator functions and how to implement and position these. If desired, SES can specify, supply and even program the interface. We have experience with many Operator Interface types, including:

WILL YOUR PANEL WORK WHEN YOU GET IT ?

Our experience and construction practices are first rate. We review the design and components used before we begin construction so that any misgivings can be discussed with our customer. Finally, we test every practical aspect of the panel before it is shipped. In some cases this meant programming a simulator to interact with the panel.

If needed, we can provide installation supervision, installation or start up in your plant.

WHAT IF YOU GET INTO TROUBLE ?

Sometimes a project produces unexpected circumstances. SES typically takes a project from concept to commissioning, or anywhere in between. By using SES you have taken the first step to prevent problems. Many panel builders don’t have the expertise or just don’t look past the panel work. SES’ experience typically makes us familiar with the systems the panel will work with. By reviewing the panel’s functions, we frequently ask questions or point out things which avoid problems. However, should the unforeseeable occur (e.g., new system requirements), it’s nice to have our engineering and start up resources available.

WHAT IF YOU NEED MORE THAN JUST A PANEL?

Southeastern is in the business of custom design/ build of entire machines and test systems… we’re been here when you needed us since 1960!

WHY CHOOSE SOUTHEASTERN SYSTEMS, INC.?

If you are an existing SES customer, you already know the answer to this question. If you have not yet used SES, then consider that we have a lot of systems in use throughout the world, some as far away as South America, Bosnia and China. We would be happy to provide customer contacts.

Beyond our experience and proven track record of quality and reliability, we are more than just a panel building shop and this keeps us from being short sighted. Our panel customers benefit from our Systems Engineering resources even though they may be just buying a panel.

Even if our Systems Engineering is not needed, we have a shop with over 30 fabricators and machinists (and yes, even furniture craftsmen). Our shop can make almost anything and it will be the very best quality. Our shop frequently makes custom consoles and mounts, does machining for mounting special equipment and makes custom bezels or trim parts. When these services were needed, they made the difference between a system which looks “fabricated” and one which looks “manufactured”.

There are other panel builders available in the Southeast, but few (if any) have our capabilities and reputation. We’d like to believe that our customer’s choose us because we’re the best value and the highest quality!
